Italians’ FERtility MOtivations in disorienting and uncertain time

Scientific Responsible for the Department: Maria Letizia Tanturri, Head of the Local Unit

Funder: Funded by the European Union- Next Generation EU

Objectives: This project explores the persistent low fertility rate in Italy, which has remained below 1.3 children per woman for three decades despite various studies. Recent data show that births were notably affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the long-term trend remains stable. The project aims to investigate whether Italians' motivations for having children are changing due to factors such as the pandemic, economic challenges, geopolitical tensions, and the looming climate crisis. The project ultimately aims to better understand how various global challenges may be reshaping fertility intentions in Italy.
